Spider-Man in Unreal
A downloadable game
I love the Spider-Man games, and this level recreates my favorite part- web swinging and wall crawling around New York to grab collectables.
Made for Steve Lee's Level Design Jam 6: Non-Linearity.
This level's goal is to grab the 14 collectable Backpacks Spider-Man has left throughout the city. These are the collectables in Insomniac's first Spider-Man game. I modified this from an existing Unreal project from Lewis Fiford, who did an amazing job making Spider-Man's web swinging, wall crawling, and every other type of movement, as well as making the city. I created the collectable system and UI, and I made some buildings and other areas to be memorable locations for the backpacks. I also used simple geometry to recreate the tall, glowing lights from Insomniac's Spider-Man that signify where the backpacks are. Having these in the level mean the player must actively look up and around the level and explore it to find the collectables and achieve the goal.
The Non-Linear aspect is the unique web swinging and wall crawling traversal. When I try to swing or jump off of a wall to reach a point, it's totally satisfying. I've noticed that I often miss the point where I want to land (I swing or jump beyond or over where I mean to), and yet I still have a lot of fun. The end results of trying to land on a specific spot are the satisfaction of successfully landing exactly where I want to (which is challenging) or the fun of doing more swinging, jumping, and crawling (which all have great game feel). Success or failure, it's always fun to be Spider-Man.
